About the project
Project overview
The maritime industry is essential to Australia’s economic and national security. It handles 99% of the nation’s trade by volume and 79% by value, while also supporting offshore wind development, oil and gas maintenance and decommissioning, tourism, fishing, and passenger transport.
The National Maritime Skills Network brings together maritime training providers to strengthen collaboration, improve the quality and consistency of training, and build a skilled workforce pipeline to meet current and future industry demand. It also supports innovation, industry engagement, and improved access to maritime training to ensure Australia can sustain critical maritime capability
Foundation membership of the Network comprises the three main TAFE institutes and a dual sector provider who deliver the Maritime Training Package qualifications required by the Strategic Fleet workforce:
- Australian Maritime College
- TAFE Queensland (Greater Barrier Reef International Marine College)
- TAFE NSW Maritime
- South Metropolitan TAFE Maritime Campus (WA Fremantle)
Industry Skills Australia (ISA) is the fifth foundation member. ISA supports and coordinates the work of the Network.

Project
What has been delivered
The establishment of the National Maritime Skills Network and Network Advisory Group is complete. A public website with centralised maritime careers, training information and a membership hub for collaboration is operational. An agreed work program, co-designed with Network Advisory Group members, is in delivery to support maritime training providers, employers and learners.
- The work program focuses on promoting maritime careers, identifying industry partnerships to address trainer and assessor shortages and resource sharing.
- The public website is a central source of maritime training information. It showcases simplified career pathways, digital stories highlighting career opportunities in maritime, training provider course links and funding information.
- A dedicated and secure Membership Hub is active for collaboration, communication and document sharing for subscribers.
