This project updated the Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training to include current training and assessment units, enabling workforce development to strengthen the capability of driving instructors.

Skills Ministers endorsed the Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training on 11 June 2025, following an update of the qualification to help address the growing demand for qualified driving instructors. The qualification supports the training of light vehicle, heavy vehicle and motorcycle driving instructors, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to educate learner drivers in the safe and efficient operation of motor vehicles on public roads.

As part of the review, a Technical Committee of subject matter experts updated the following units from the Training and Education (TAE) Training Package:

  • TAEASS311 – Contribute to assessment
  • TAEDEL311 – Provide work skill instruction

What did this mean for industry?

The updated qualification strengthens the capability of professional driver trainers by aligning training outcomes with current industry needs and the National Heavy Vehicle Driver Competency Framework. It supports the development of a skilled instructor workforce, helping meet increased demand for driving instruction while promoting safe driving practices and positive road safety outcomes across the light vehicle, heavy vehicle and motorcycle sectors.

What did this mean for Registered Training Organisations?

To support implementation of the revised qualification, the Companion Volume Implementation Guide (CVIG) was updated. The guide provides:

  • Details of all training products within the Training Package.
  • Mapping information showing changes to revised training products.
  • Implementation advice for trainers, assessors, RTOs and employers.
  • Links to supporting resources and information.
