Safety, Innovation, and Workforce Development Take Centre Stage at the 2025 VTA Conference

The 2025 VTA State Conference took place from Sunday, 23 March to Tuesday, 23 March 2025, at the Silverwater Resort in San Remo, Victoria. Organised by the Victorian Transport Association (VTA).

The conference brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss the evolving needs of the transport sector under the theme "Safety First: Empowering People, Boosting Productivity, Shaping Transport’s Future." The event provided valuable insights into workforce development, safety improvements, and the latest innovations shaping the industry.

The new Volvo EV prime mover, was on display and had many attendees looking over it. As the industry continues its shift toward sustainability, discussions around electric and alternative-fuel vehicles highlighted the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Workforce development remained a central theme throughout the conference, with several speakers highlighting Industry Skills Australia’s (ISA) 2024 Workforce Plans and the Heavy Vehicle Apprenticeship as vital initiatives in addressing skills shortages. The recognition of these programs is a testament to the industry's commitment to building a sustainable workforce and the valuable feedback received, reinforcing how critical these workforce plans are in shaping the future of transport and logistics. The conference also provided a forward-looking perspective on how industry needs will evolve over the coming years.

A major highlight was the VTA Driver Training Program, which has seen 25% of its graduates being women, a significant step forward for diversity in the sector. Encouraging more diversity into transport roles remains a priority, and this growing participation is a positive sign of change.

With discussions on Training and Workforce Development shaping the future of transport, Industry Skills Australia (ISA) is now seeking input on the 2025 Draft Workforce Plan. Have your say and help shape a stronger Transport & Logistics workforce.
