On the Right Track - The Hands-On Approach to Rail Industry Engagement

In her ongoing efforts to deepen understanding and collaboration within the rail industry, Carly Grigg, Industry Engagement Manager for Rail, has been actively participating in field activities and discussions to address key workforce challenges.

Carly achieved course completion for the 'Train Track Safety Awareness' program in December 2024, a critical requirement for conducting Victorian onsite visits with Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM). This qualification ensures her readiness to engage directly with the industry's operational environment.

As a follow up, in January 2025, Carly conducted a site visit with MTM. Accompanied by Training Manager Carly Murray, the visit provided firsthand exposure to the operations of the Laverton Train Line. This immersive experience highlighted the complexities of the day-to-day challenges faced by train drivers and rail operators. Special thanks go to Metro Trains for facilitating this valuable experience.

Key Discussions:
During the site visit, Carly engaged in in-depth discussions about pressing workforce challenges, including:

  • The application of new RTO (Registered Training Organisation) Standards.
  • Addressing gender diversity and implementing flexible work arrangements.
  • Managing pressures on trainers and assessors.

"Understanding these challenges firsthand is crucial to effectively addressing the evolving needs of the rail industry,” Carly said. “Developing train drivers is a complex task, and taking a hands-on approach brings these challenges to life."

Her visit not only emphasised the importance of practical engagement but also reinforced the need for innovative solutions to support the industry's growth and sustainability. This approach underscores our commitment to building a resilient, skilled workforce for the rail sector.
