Maritime Skills Roundtable Held in Fremantle to Address Industry Challenges
The Hon. Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Skills and Training hosted a Maritime Skills Roundtable last week at the Fremantle Port Authority, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss workforce challenges and industry sustainability. The event was a significant step to strengthen Australia’s maritime industry.
Facilitated by ISA CEO Paul Walsh, the roundtable discussion with leaders from industry, unions, government, and training institutions, provided a platform to discuss skills challenges and explore solutions.
The roundtable was also an opportunity for leaders to work together, with discussion centring on the need to attract new talent, improve retention, and develop structured career pathways. The need for practical solutions including strengthening access to training and increasing awareness of maritime career pathways are crucial steps to support future growth in the maritime industry.
Paul highlighted the importance of collaboration in tackling these challenges, stating, “The maritime industry is a cornerstone of our economy, and addressing skills shortages is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector. Bringing leaders together is vital to solving the industry’s workforce issues”.
Continued engagement and cooperation among stakeholders will be essential to ensuring a skilled and sustainable maritime workforce for the future.
