Maritime - National Maritime Skills Network

This project will establish a National Maritime Skills Network to bring together training providers from around Australia to build dynamic communities of practice focused on collaboration, innovation, and excellence in teaching, learning, and assessment.

As an island nation, Maritime is critical to our nation’s economic sovereignty and national security.  It moves 99% of Australia’s goods traded by volume, and around 79% by value. Maritime also plays a vital role in our shift to Net Zero by supporting offshore wind farm construction and maintenance and decommissioning offshore oil and gas installations.  In addition, it is fundamental to tourism, commercial fishing, and movement of passengers.

Because of its fundamental role, the Australian Government has committed to establishing an independent Strategic Fleet of up to 12 Australian-flagged and crewed vessels, commencing with a pilot of three vessels.  At a time when demand for maritime workers is outstripping supply and there are existing shortages of deck officers, engineers, and ratings, the National Skills System is set to play a vital in building the maritime workforce.

Establishment of the National Maritime Skills Network will bring together training providers from around Australia to build dynamic communities of practice focused on collaboration, innovation, and excellence in teaching, learning, and assessment.  Working together will also create a better geographical spread of training options, and improved access for learners.

In addition to collaborating with each other, Network members will work with Industry Skills Australia (ISA) on a range of projects targeted at building the maritime workforce.

Initial membership of the Network will be focussed on the three TAFE Institutes and dual sector provider delivering Maritime Training Package qualifications required by the Strategic Fleet workforce.

Establishment of the Network will be through a co-design process involving ISA, the Initial Network Members, and Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.

In its first 18 months, outputs will include:

  • National Maritime Skills Network (Initial Membership)
  • An agreed program of work
  • Public website
  • Network Hub for member collaboration

Establishment of the Network will be completed by mid-2025, with initial operations and program of work activities commencing thereafter.
