A Firsthand Look at Livestock Transport Operations and Workforce Development
Last week, Camilla Elmes, our Industry Engagement Manager for Transport and Logistics, had the opportunity to visit Martin’s Stock Haulage to gain firsthand insight into livestock transport operations. The visit provided a deeper understanding of the essential skills required in this critical transport sector and highlighted opportunities for workforce development.
Livestock transport is a highly specialised field, requiring heavy vehicle drivers to possess unique skills that ensure both animal welfare and safe vehicle operation. The industry relies on experienced professionals who understand the complexities of handling and transporting livestock while adhering to stringent regulations and safety protocols.
A key focus of the visit was exploring the potential for a nationally accredited training pathway to establish consistent standards for livestock transport drivers. Additionally, there are opportunities to develop innovative, place-based programs to support workforce development and enhance industry training.
Beyond the role of heavy vehicle drivers, the industry offers a range of career opportunities in supporting roles, including diesel mechanics, schedulers, fleet managers, administration staff, and trainers. These positions play a vital role in keeping operations running smoothly and present rewarding career paths for those looking to enter the transport and logistics sector.
A special thank you to Graeme Hoare for providing an in-depth tour of the depot and showcasing the workforce initiatives in place at Martin’s Stock Haulage. His insights highlighted the evolving demands of the industry and the importance of continued investment in skills development and training programs.
